Design

Every measurement of the knife, group by group.

Project
The project file (.json) holds everything: these details, the whole design, the nest, your proportion table and saved presets. Older or newer files import with a report of anything missing or unknown.
Reference ghosts
Knife
Reads the outline's edge, heel, tip, spine, belly, choil and tang into the values below, sets the type to match and shows the outline on the drawing as a ghost. A blade STL or 3MF exported from here (or any flat outline model with the tip at the origin) is read the same way, with its thickness and project details. Handle values stay auto unless the file carries a handle; held values are left alone.
Auto values follow the type; unlock any to set it, lock to keep it through resets.
Blade — tip and belly
Advanced — spine and belly curves
Each curve is a smooth spline. Above sets where it starts; here, how long it holds its line before turning, the angle it meets the tip at, and how far it runs straight into the tip. Auto values draw a plain arc.
Heel and choil
Rake leans the heel line back toward the handle (positive) or forward (negative). The choil radius is the inside curve from the heel line onto the ledge; the ledge runs back to the machi.
Tang
Handle
Spacer stack and colours
Small / large scale the auto length ∓5 % and the section ∓6 %; manual values are left alone.
Advanced — densities and scale thickness
Grind
Distal taper runs from stock thickness at the machi to the tip thickness. Bevel height 100 is a full grind; less is a sabre grind with flats above. Grind type shapes the faces: flat V is straight, hollow is concave off a wheel and leaves the least steel behind the edge, convex is fattened off a slack belt, single bevel keeps one face flat (kataba).

Sections — thickness drawn ×4

A, B and C mark where each section is cut on the drawing above while this group is open.

Drawings
A3 landscape. Print at 100 % / actual size and measure the 100 mm ruler before trusting it; the nest sheet prints to fit and states its scale.
CAD and waterjet
DXF R12, millimetres — fillets as true arcs, spine and belly curves as fine polylines. Profile: tip at origin, edge line y = 0, handle on HANDLE_REF. Nest: bar on BAR_REF, one layer per blank. Every CAD package and waterjet CAM reads DXF; DWG can't be written in a browser, and any CAD tool converts DXF to DWG if a shop insists.
Mock-ups
Flat extrusions for printed size and knuckle checks — not tapered. The 3MF stands the handle on its ferrule end and carries the project metadata.
Everything, one file
File names carry the project name, knife and revision; the project details go on every PDF sheet, into the DXF and README comments, the STL header and the 3MF metadata.
Presets and sharing
Presets live in this browser. The link carries the whole design, so it works anywhere.

What the numbers say about the design as it stands.

Sunobe Studio

A sunobe (素延べ) is the rough blank a knife starts life as. Profile, stock, handle and grind for Japanese kitchen knives — so you can see the blank before cutting expensive steel.

Sunobe Studio is one hobbyist knife maker in Canberra, Australia. The passion started on a course at Tharwa Valley Forge, just down the road — I can't recommend their courses highly enough. I make Japanese-style kitchen knives in a home workshop and built this tool because I wanted to see a blank before cutting steel. It's free and it stays free.

Follow the knives on Instagram at @sunobestudio. If the tool saved you a ruined blank or an evening of CAD, you can buy me a coffee below — it keeps the domain paid.

Pick a knife type for its proportions, set the edge length, and the heel, tip, neck, tang and handle follow. Shape, stock, handle and grind each have their own controls; every derived value can be unlocked. Millimetres throughout.
